Home | Bangalore Fair & Festivals | Ugadi Festival
'Ugadi' is derived from the word 'Yuga Aadi' which means beginning or start of a new age. Ugadi festival is merrily celebrated all across the city of Bangalore in the second half of the month of March or in the beginning of the month of April. The festival signifies the advent of new year and the spring season with vivid colorful florets, lush green fields, chirping birds all indicating a new beginning. The day is considered very auspicious by the south Indians as they carry a belief that Lord Brahma created the world on this day. The festival day starts with tons of devotion and delight. People wake up early in the morning, clean their houses, take bath and offer prayers to Lord Brahma. The prayers goes on till late in the night. People wear new clothes and cook special dishes on this day. The entrance of the houses are adorned with fresh mango leaves and colorful floral designs (Rangolis) are made in front of the houses. It is also believed that Lord Vishnu was incarnated in to Matsya on this day. Bangaloreans believe that the day is apt to start a new venture. The joy and excitement exuded on this day is simply unparalleled and a feast for senses.
