It is believed that one day, while serving the 14 years exile in the dense forests of present day Avani village, about 10 miles from the gold fields, Lord Rama and his brother came upon Ravana's sister Surpanakha. The beast then proposed the two brothers to marry her. To ward her off Lakshman slashed her nose. To take vengeance, Ravana planned to abduct Sita and sent a golden deer to lure her. Sita got so enticed on seeing the deer that she sent Lord Rama and Lakshman to obtain it for her. Rama killed the deer but in the absence of the two, Ravana managed to kidnap Sita. It is believed that the place where the golden deer was killed, turned in to a Gold mine later.
