The antiquated city of Mysore, is also called the city of Palaces. The city has so much to offer to its discerning tourists that it becomes indispensible to visit it once. Mysore is situated at a distance of 146 kms from the Bangalore city and is extremely rich in arts and culture. Ruled by the Wodeyar dynasty, the city was once the cultural capital of the Kingdom of Mysore and boasts of a number of ancient forts, palaces and temples of that era. Jaganmohana Palace, the Jayalakshmi Vilas and the Lalitha Mahal are some of the palaces housed in the city with Mysore Palace being the iconic and the most distinguished one. The other famous and appealing sites in Mysore comprises of the Mysore Zoo (Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens), Karangi Lake, the Regional Museum of Natural History, a number of historic Hindu temples, the Jaganmohan Art Gallery, the Rail Museum and the annual Navaratri (Dasara) festival. The city is also famous for its silk sarees made of Mysore silk, Mysore style painting and Mysore peta (conventional turban made of silk).
